Shopping Habits of Canadians Revealed - New Survey Signals Lucrative Market Opportunities for U.S. Retailers

This report takes the pulse of the Canadian consumer and their shopping tendencies. What is evident, with resounding clarity, is that Canadians are increasing their expenditures through the internet and direct sales channels and that there are significant growth opportunities for retailers in Canada.

Key findings of the Multi-Channel Shopping - Canadian Style report:

  1. An average of (CDN) $447 was spent by online shoppers in the past six months with 80% making two or more purchases online.
  2. 87% of online shoppers indicated that they were satisfied with their shopping experience on the Internet, indicating strong acceptance and consumer confidence in purchasing online (versus only 76% in store).
  3. Between 2004 and 2005, Canadian online shoppers experienced a 14% increase in the number of catalogues received. More than one out of seven purchased in-store after having received a catalogue and as high as 83% researched online prior to buying in-store. Frequent catalogue recipients reported the highest levels of online spending.
  4. Clothing and accessories, health and beauty, toys and video games, and furniture, home and garden represent the four leading growth categories.
  5. 55% of online shoppers are women and 28% of heavy online buyers are between the ages of 25-34.
